Numeracy at Sacred Heart includes a focus on interactive, hands on learning, open ended tasks, small group, whole class and individual instruction that engages all students in the learning process. The mathematics curriculum focuses on developing high-level mathematical understanding, fluency, reasoning, modelling and problem solving. Students investigate real world problems through number, measurement and geometry, statistics and probability. A variety of assessment methods are used to gain greater insight into the understanding of our students. Assessment methods include, but are not limited to the Mathematics Assessment Interview (MAI), NAPLAN, rich open-ended tasks and general observations.
Our mathematics programs aim to:
- Create opportunities for useful mathematical and numeracy skills for their everyday life
- Identify connections between their understanding of mathematical concepts, skills and processes and apply these when problem solving across curriculum areas
- Use mathematics when interpreting and comparing information and to make informed decisions.
